Solar Power Still Pays!
Electrotect02 Feb 2012
Solar panels on your roof are still a wise investment, despite the Government’s recent unexpected decision to halve the attractive Feed-In Tariff.
To combat this, leading installers Electroctect UK Ltd, who specialise in solar photovoltaic renewable energy installations, are massively reducing their prices in order to still offer a 10 per cent return on investment, so the return will not be much different from before.
Electrotect clients will still get the same high standard of installation, and will gain the benefits of a system that can cut electricity bills by up to £400 a year – well worth considering when power companies are raising prices by up to 60 per cent.
December 12th is the deadline for installations to be completed before FITs (Feed-In Tariffs) payments are reduced from 43p per Kwh to 21p per Kwh, reducing the incentive, so there’s still time to act, if you act fast!
But Electrotect’s bold price cuts means householders and businesses needn’t miss the boat even if they miss the December deadline. They will discover that micro-generation is a sensible means of earning money, cutting power bills and reducing their carbon footprint, whether it’s on the family home or a small business.
The Government first introduced Feed-in Tariffs, a Clean Energy Cash Back scheme, to provide an incentive for small scale power generation. Under this scheme, energy suppliers make regular payments to householders and communities who generate their own electricity from renewable or low carbon sources, such as solar photovoltaic (PV) panels or wind turbines.
The scheme guarantees a minimum payment for all electricity generated by the system, as well as a separate payment for the electricity exported to the national grid. The payments are index-linked, tax free and guaranteed for 25 years and are in addition to the savings made by using the on-site generated electricity.
Daniel Lang, of Electrotect, advises people on how to apply for the FITs scheme and the expected rate of financial return. “We believe we have a responsibility to the environment to cut down CO2 emissions”, said Danny. “Despite the reduction in FITs payments, this scheme makes micro-generation accessible to a far wider range of people.”
Daniel added: “We use the latest, mainly German, technology. It is guaranteed for 25 years – giving you plenty of time to not only recoup your investment, but also make money and add value to your home.”
The lightweight PV panels are fairly unobtrusive and can be fitted to either roofs or walls. The DC electricity created is converted into usable power (AC) via a wall-mounted inverter in the attic. It then runs through a generation meter to your household distribution board.

Daniel added: “Our installation causes little disruption and, depending on the size of the job, can be up and running well within a week.”
Fortunately for us in the North, solar panels don’t require bright sunshine to generate power; they only need daylight. And for when the sun goes down, Electrotect are now looking at installing complete off-grid systems so your solar panels help charge a bank of batteries through the day. Then in the evening the batteries run your home, completely eliminating the need to pay an electricity supplier. You can also still claim the Feed In Tariff – it’s a win- win situation. These systems are ideally suited to rural situations.
Two people who recently took advantage of the Clean Energy scheme are Suzanne and Donald in Adel. “We thought it was about time we put our money where our mouths are,” said Suzanne, who leads the Green Team at St Chad’s Church. “We are delighted with our new system. It took just a couple of days to install, with minimum fuss, and it was generating electricity immediately – even on a dull day! And, financially, the rate of return is far better than other investment opportunities.”
Daniel adds: “Perhaps soon micro-generation will be incorporated into every new build and we will all become less dependent on power generated using fossil fuels or nuclear. That’s an idea we might have laughed at ten years ago, but it seems far more achievable now.”
Feed in tariff example
Mr Green wants a 3kw system on his south facing roof in Skipton, the cost of the installation being in the region of £8,700. A 3kw System in Leeds will produce 2550 kwh per year therefore Mr Green will earn around £535.00 for the total amount of electricity the PV system will generate, regardless of whether or not it is used within the home (21p x 2550 kwh).
Please note generally a household is always using electricity occupied or not.
£357 in savings through not having to import and be charged from the grid.
This assumes that electricity is bought from the supplier at 14p per kwh
Note as energy costs rise this saving becomes greater!!
= £892.00
So Mr Green would have a payback on his system in 25 years of £22,312.50, that’s a tax free profit of £13,612.50 Tax Free!
Which makes a Pv system a great financial investment, not just a home improvement.
